Recently i read a piece by George Ibenegbu on what is Cultism and its effects, He stated that
One of an essential problems which are facing by Nigeria is cultism and as he said "Cultism in Nigeria has been a long-stand enemy that provided negative impacts on people."
Why are Nigerian Youths still adherent to Cultism?
Cultism is the membership and operation of secret cults. It is involvement in cult activities. Secret cult is an extreme group where the members behave in ways that are not acceptable by society.
Cultism runs counter to the principles and practices of Nigerian Society and the effects of cultism are felt at the individual, family, societal, school, national, and international levels.

The individual cultist loses his self-identity to enable the group identity. He then loses his ability to think and act independently. His values are distorted and he is soon looked upon by society as a criminal.
According to Observations and studies the Main reasons Youths are lured into this various societies are:

1.Fear and Insecurity
2. Quest For Power and Revenge
3. Popularity and Wealth

The recently unpopular BADOO Gang is said to hve began its activities at Ibeshe, Ikorodu, They are known to target homes that are in secluded areas and have easy access. This is so because when their victims scream no one can hear them, The popular theory is that they are ritualists and not thieves. When they attack they take certain body parts of their victims and wipe away the blood. They also rape female victims and they are rumoured to be backed by the ikorodu traditional leaders.
Its So sad when you hear stories of Cultist groups being backed by Certain Prominent groups or people, In my opinion the Federal Government has a serious obligation to curb all this menances going on in various parts of the country..

Question is- Can Cultism be totally eradicated from Nigeria?
Below are Suggestions given by various people
1. Eradicate or curtail the activities of all cults like the Ogboni fraternity, Armoc, etc This is necessary because we can not tell the children to stop it, when their parents indulge in it. There should be a law banning all of them.

2. Make it a law to be criminal for any lecturer to be a cultist. Any known cultist lecturer should be sacked

3. Treat cult members among students as armed robbers and assasins. The cultists use arms and they cause destruction, so they should be handled with very severe punishment. Anyone that kills should be killed and anyone that maims should be jailed. It is not sufficient to just rusticate them or expel them from the institutions. They should face the full brunt of the law.

4. There should be a very serious awareness programme talking about the ills of cultism and the punishment for it. The way HIV/AIDS campaign has been reinforced, is they way we need to tackle cultism. I am sure the originator of cultism is now regreting ever starting the idea because hoodlums have hijacked his intentions.

5. A high-powered espionage should be carried out on all campuses and government offices to flush cultists out. They meet on land, not in the air, some even announce their meetings. They should all be smoked out and made to face the law.

If we can be sincere about these proposals, cultism will be reduced to the barest minimum. It is seen as a statua symbol now, so some students are enticed with that but by the time we make it look as a plague, that it is, everyone will flee from it.
